Polyester biaxial geogrid is the kind of geosynthetic material which is widely used to reinforce retaining walls, as well as subbases or subsoils below roads or structures. Plastic biaxial geogrid is often made from plastic materials which may be high-density polyester resins through the processes of extruding, sheet forming, punching and stretching. Compared with uniaxial plastic geogrid, biaxial plastic geogrid has high tensile strength and excellent tensile modulus in both longitudinal and transverse direction, so the polyester biaxial geogrid can offer superior stiffness, high strength at low strain, aperture stability and interlock capabilities, maximum bearing capacity and shear resistance for for structural reinforcement of paved and unpaved roads. BPM brand polyester biaxial geogrid can be used as soil reinforcement below roads, under structures, behind retaining walls, pavement overlays reinforcement, strengthening soft ground of highway, railway, slope protecting projects and airfields, it can also enhance soil structure, prevent soil erosion, increase stability and loading capacity of foundation, prolong the project life.

- Project: Park Parking Lot
Issue
Due to the lack of current park and ride facilities, the government decided to make efficient use of public land by developing new park and ride facilities on the abandoned landfill.
Challenge
A feasibility study conducted in 2011 confirmed that differential sedimentation would continue as the waste material breaks down further. Therefore, soil stabilization and pavement reinforcement were key elements of the project.
Site Conditions: Landfill surface heights vary from 25 feet to 40 feet. An outdated methane gas collection system was also installed, so a temporary modification to the collection system and existing landfill cover was made, and the site was then preloaded with 150,000 tons of fill.
Solution
The project was completed in two phases. The first phase (2012-2015) included site preparation, gas collection and subsurface compaction.
“We did the preloading in two stages,” said BPM’s project engineer and project manager. “Half of the clean fill material was placed and left for six months. The remaining half was then placed and allowed to sit for the same amount of time.”
After the compaction was completed, the second phase started in 2016 with the use of polyester biaxial geogrid to stabilize the subgrade for layered construction. BPM’s in-law engineer explained that the liner and fill had been placed when the landfill closed nearly 25 years ago; now, “we have to maintain a 6-inch fill layer between the original liner and the new polyester biaxial geogrid, as a buffer layer for the liner.” The project manager said the polyester biaxial geogrid installation was done in four stages to accommodate the most efficient material movement on site and was a “straightforward job”. From start to finish, the installation went smoothly without any fluctuations. It is easier to fix and safer than solid (geotextile) materials.
The project manager on the project side had a similar observation, noting that “once the BPM geogrid collapses, it’s strong—the vibration is over.” The project engineer further explained that in areas that support commuter driveways and parking lots, the installation single-layer BPM geogrid. Next place a 12″ fill layer, then a geomembrane liner,
Additional 30 inches of padding and paving. Paving features a 4″ crushed surface with 3” asphalt.
The area to support bus traffic was constructed differently: 12 inches of infill was placed over the existing liner, followed by a geomembrane. In the last 60 inches of infill, two layers of BPM geogrid, spaced 16 inches apart.
Except, is installed. Paving consists of 3 inches of asphalt, reinforced with the BPM geogrid system and topped with 3 inches of surface asphalt. While concrete is typically used for bus lanes and turns, asphalt was specified throughout the project due to its flexibility in the case of differential settlement. The project’s five-person installation team installed the BPM geogrid system and its pre-applied adhesive film, and the crew completed the installation in about five hours.
Successful result: After five years of planning and development, the park facility opened in January 2015. The site increases park-and-ride capacity in Darwin Bay by more than 75%; helps relieve heavily congested sections of nearby highways; and makes efficient and sustainable use of public land.
Advantage
- Increase the bearing capacity of roadbed and foundation and prolong their service life.
- Prevent subsidence or holes in the road surface and foundation, and keep the ground clean and beautiful.
- Convenient construction, saving time and effort, reducing installation time and maintenance costs.
- Prevent defects in culverts.
- Improve soil slope to prevent soil erosion.
- Reduce the thickness of the bottom layer and save the manufacturing cost.
- Enhance the stability of the turf net patches on the slope and improve the greening effect.
- Instead of the wire mesh used in mines as an intermediate ceiling mesh.
Summary
The biaxially stretched geogrid is made of high molecular polymer through the process of extrusion, plate forming and punching, and then stretched vertically and horizontally. The material has great tensile strength in both longitudinal and transverse directions, and this structure can also provide a more effective bearing and diffusion ideological interlocking system in the soil, which is suitable for the foundation reinforcement of large-scale permanent bearing.
